Although many skyscrapers and complexes with luxury stores have been constructed throughout Tokyo, Ameya-yokocho (called Ameyoko) has a chaotic Asian flavor with full of vitality. Located along the elevated railway between Ueno and Okachimachi Stations, Ameyoko is the street market originated from the black market after the war. More than 500 small shops selling various goods like fish, shoes, confectionery and cosmetics are closely packed in the area.
There is a shop which always attracts me among them. Niki no Kashi is a discount candy and snack shop where we can buy lots of snacks at low prices. From cheap sweets kids like to local snacks and imported chocolates, I can’t help buying something. Here’s good for tourists to look for souvenirs.
I walked down the street while eating fresh pineapple on a stick. I’m a Tokyoite but nowhere in Tokyo can feel I’m an Asian other than Ameyoko. If you walk through the street, you will find a lot more waiting for you.

*I’d recommend to visit Ameyoko in the afternoon, the most lively time of the day.
